{"id":6964,"date":"2022-03-16T13:35:56","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T13:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/?p=6964"},"modified":"2022-05-09T13:11:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T13:11:43","slug":"gold-in-the-time-of-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2022\/03\/16\/gold-in-the-time-of-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold in the time of war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 28 February the US, EU and UK froze most of the Russian central bank\u2019s $630bn foreign currency reserves, responding to the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-statement-on-further-economic-sanctions-targeted-at-the-central-bank-of-the-russian-federation\">In the words of the UK government<\/a>, the freeze aimed \u201cto prevent the central bank of Russia from deploying its foreign reserves in ways that undermine the impact of sanctions imposed by us and our allies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But around 20 percent of the CBR\u2019s reserves\u2014the portion held in gold\u2014could not be touched by sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because Russia\u2019s gold is held within the country. In theory, it is still free to use its gold as it wishes.
