{"id":6616,"date":"2021-09-24T10:11:10","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T10:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/?p=6616"},"modified":"2021-10-21T09:42:08","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T09:42:08","slug":"twitter-launches-bitcoin-tipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2021\/09\/24\/twitter-launches-bitcoin-tipping\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter launches bitcoin tipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US social media giant Twitter is expanding its Tips feature to include the leading cryptocurrency, bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/242606\/number-of-active-twitter-users-in-selected-countries\/\">over 200 million users<\/a>, introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/help.twitter.com\/en\/using-twitter\/tips\">Tips<\/a> in May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re making it easier to support the people driving the conversation on Twitter \u2013 whether you want to support a content creator, help someone fundraise, tip someone who just needs some help or thank someone for making you laugh,\u201d Twitter said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter said it was introducing Tips initially for a limited group of English-speaking Twitter users around the world. This group includes creators, journalists, experts, and non-profits, Twitter said.<\/p>\n<p>Tips is currently restricted to iPhones users, though Twitter said it would soon be introducing an Android version.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Twitter announced it was <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2021\/bringing-tips-to-everyone\">extending Tips from dollar-only payments to include bitcoin<\/a>, via a collaboration with Strike, a payments app built on bitcoin\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/27\/bitcoins-strange-feedback-loop\/\">Lightning\u2019 network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning is a layer of technology built on top of the bitcoin network to enable cheaper payments. On bitcoin\u2019s base layer, <a href=\"https:\/\/ycharts.com\/indicators\/bitcoin_average_transaction_fee\">the cost of a single transaction was $20-30<\/a> for an extended period earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>However, making bitcoin payments cheaper by using Lightning comes at a cost.<\/p>\n<p>Payments on bitcoin\u2019s own blockchain can be conducted by anyone running a node on the network.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2020\/05\/27\/bitcoins-strange-feedback-loop\/\">the cheaper payments available on Lightning come at the expense of risk exposure to the operator of the Lightning node,<\/a> such as Strike.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re making it easier to support the people driving the conversation\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Twitter\u2019s Tips feature currently uses several other third-party payment providers, including Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal and Venmo.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter takes no cut from payments sent as tips, the social media firm said.<\/p>\n<p>Strike, <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/business\/zaps-strike-moves-to-public-beta\">which was launched last year<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BoHNkX4OWQA&amp;ab_channel=CNBCTelevision\">has been closely involved in the recent move by El Salvador to make bitcoin legal tender<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Twitter\u2019s CEO, Jack Dorsey, told the Bitcoin 2021 conference that bitcoin could offer the ability to store value to the world\u2019s unbanked and under-banked. He also reiterated his commitment to the leading cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, bitcoin changes absolutely everything,&#8221; Dorsey said. &#8220;What I&#8217;m drawn to the most about it is the ethos, what it represents&#8230; Whatever I can do, whatever my companies can do to make [bitcoin] accessible to everyone, that is what I will do for the rest of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twitter users able to accept tips and wishing to do so in bitcoin will need a Strike account, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblockcrypto.com\/post\/116320\/twitter-appears-to-be-adding-the-ability-to-tip-using-bitcoin\">to a report in <em>the Block<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Twitter users tipping somebody else will be able to use any bitcoin Lightning wallet to send tips to someone\u2019s Strike account, the firm said.<\/p>\n<p>The social media firm\u2019s reliance on third parties like Strike to process payments leaves it exposed to increased financial crime risks, according to David Gerard, a widely followed cryptocurrency commentator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will absolutely get the people who currently run bitcoin scams using this functionality,\u201d Gerard told <em>New Money Review<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter will then claim they had nothing to do with it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a company blog, Twitter said users of Tips would be subject to third-party payment platforms\u2019 terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>These include observing the \u2018know-your-customer\u2019 (KYC) and anti-money-laundering (AML) rules set by the world\u2019s financial regulators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we allow users to interact with both fiat currency and bitcoin, we are required to comply with KYC\/AML laws,\u201d Strike CEO Jack Mallers <a href=\"https:\/\/jimmymow.medium.com\/announcing-strike-public-beta-325877a79f87\">said last year<\/a> when launching the service.<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of tip-making apps has soared in the last decade, making them an area of focus for the social media giants, many of whose previous attempts to get into money have stumbled.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook was last year forced <a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/05\/why-libra-was-bound-to-fail\/\">to dial down its attempts to launch a global currency called Libra<\/a>, though it has enabled payments via its WhatsApp messaging app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery major social media platform has attempted to launch a payments component in the last ten years. Almost all of them have been unsuccessful,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/04\/tiktok-shows-the-message-is-the-money\/\">media scholar Lana Swartz told <em>New Money Review<\/em> last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut one that has taken off in the US is [tipping app] Venmo,\u201d she said.
