{"id":6283,"date":"2021-04-12T14:14:50","date_gmt":"2021-04-12T14:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/?p=6283"},"modified":"2021-04-30T12:42:10","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T12:42:10","slug":"largest-crypto-exchange-moves-into-us-equity-trading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/12\/largest-crypto-exchange-moves-into-us-equity-trading\/","title":{"rendered":"Largest crypto exchange moves into US equity trading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Binance, the world\u2019s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is launching tokenised equity trading for its clients, starting with an offering of Tesla shares.<\/p>\n<p>The move will permit Binance\u2019s clients to own US shares without having to cash in their crypto tokens and buy those shares through a traditional stockbroker.<\/p>\n<p>Binance, which supports trading in more than 1,000 cryptoasset token pairs, says its mission is to be the infrastructure services provider for the blockchain ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange, which handles 1.4m transactions per second, was set up in 2017. It has so far managed to grow while skirting the regulations for traditional financial intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>Binance\u2019s CEO, Changpeng Zhao, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-04-07\/binance-ceo-changpeng-zhao-says-i-just-want-to-keep-crypto\">told Bloomberg recently<\/a> that the exchange deliberately operates without a single corporate headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Binance has in the past been criticised for <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/binance-sued-for-allegedly-facilitating-money-laundering-with-lax-kyc\">lax know-your-customer (\u2018KYC\u2019) standards<\/a> and for the indiscriminate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdfundinsider.com\/2020\/09\/166346-binance-ceo-admits-exchange-has-to-list-risky-defi-coins-otherwise-traffic-goes-to-others-making-them-obsolete\/\">listing of risky tokens from decentralised finance (\u2018DeFi\u2019) projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Binance <a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/19\/defi-is-centralised-after-all\/\">supports a growing share of the DeFi market through its \u2018Smart Chain\u2019 project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-03-12\/crypto-exchange-binance-investigated-by-u-s-over-who-s-trading\">reportedly under investigation from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)<\/a> for having permitted US residents to buy and sell derivatives without permission from the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today Binance said that it is launching zero-commission, tradable stock tokens, initially on US shares.<\/p>\n<p>The tokens are backed by shares stored in a depository portfolio of underlying securities, in cooperation with Munich-based investment firm CM-Equity AG and Swiss-based asset tokenization platform Digital Assets AG, Binance said.<\/p>\n<p>Trading in the stock tokens will take place in Binance\u2019s native \u2018stablecoin\u2019 (BUSD), which is pegged to the US dollar and issued by New York-based Paxos Trust Co.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate initiative, last week Paxos announced it had successfully trialled US equity trading with same-day settlement, a shorter cycle than the standard \u2018T+2\u2019 (settlement two days after trade date) currently used by most intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>Binance says holders of its new stock tokens will qualify for capital returns on the underlying equity, including potential dividends and stock splits, as they would from holding traditional shares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStock tokens demonstrate how we can democratize value transfer more seamlessly, reduce friction and costs to accessibility, without compromising on compliance or security,\u201d said Changpeng Zhao.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/eepurl.com\/du6eTr\">Sign up here<\/a> for the New Money Review newsletter<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blubrry.com\/newmoneyreview\/\">Click here<\/a> for a full list of episodes of the New Money Review podcast: the future of money in 30 minutes<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Related content from New Money Review<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newmoneyreview.com\/index.php\/2018\/09\/25\/why-settlement-matters\/\">Why settlement matters<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A new money infrastructure could end bank bailouts<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Binance, the world\u2019s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is launching tokenised equity trading for its clients, starting with an offering of Tesla shares.
